New Asics campaign says "running is in our DNA." Fair enough. But what's not in OUR DNA is running 26.2 miles.

Asics makes fine running shoes. I run in Asics Gel-DS trainers. Great combo of lightweight and supportive. And there is no better cardiovascular exercise than running. There is also no better way to fuck up your feet/ankles/knees/hips than long-distance running (by "long-distance" I mean over 10K). The human body is not built to take that much pounding. I offer as evidence 1) the once-great Alberto Salazar—distance running has nearly killed him a couple of times. 2) my Dad—years of competitive running, including multiple marathons, has left his lower body so hobbled that he's now only able to get exercise by kayaking.
At right above, is a midtown Asics billboard playing up the brand as the official shoe of this Sunday's NYC (sorry, ING NYC) Marathon. It's a cute (a little too cute) execution showing how the City comes together for the event. It's at least better than Reebok's atrocious running shoe advertising [examples here, here, and here], though much safer than Pearl Izumi's.
If you're running the race, good luck. I also truly hope you don't make a habit of it.

I also run in Asics, GT 20-- series (2060 through the current 2120...now that's brand preference), and have run 2 marathons. I tried to get into this one but was denied. Fuckers. And yes, distance hurts. I'm in no rush to see what awaits me when I turn 60.

In reference to these ads, the print sample I'm not fond of, but I was actually pleased when I started seeing the NYC running partner stuff in the subway. Pretty simple. Not bad.
