BBDO Toronto sez "Real Mexicans" are lazy and dirty, or wrestlers.

(click ads, via) Jesus, this is 2010, right? Do Canadians really hate Mexicans worse than Lou Dobbs? I'm looking for some sort of escape hatch in these ridiculously stereotypic ads for the Quesada Mexican Grill by BBDO's Toronto office. Searching...searching...finding...no way out. Previous stops on the Mexican racism ad world tour: South Africa. Belgium. Germany. And 1940 America.

Yes, I know they're "tongue-in-cheek" visuals, but the line reads "Real Mexicans." And SeƱor Siesta is indeed very dirty.

Stepehen Colbert makes fun of stereotypes on his show all the time. People laugh. Its tongue in cheek. Colbert doesnt own the copyright on that kind of humor...There's always going to be people offended by stuff, and my guess is in this case, none of them are actually Mexican.

Has anyone actually eaten there? Effin delicious. Hell of a restaurant. If anyone can get away with this, its them, for making the best mexican food in Toronto.

please don't judge all canadians by what toronto is up to. they're in a completely different universe from the rest of us...

it's a shame they decided to go this direction for the ads, considering it's apparently such a great place to eat. somehow not surprised though, considering how out of touch ad agencies in toronto can be.

They are horrible! And no self-respecting Mexican wrestler would ever eat there!
What really bothers me is the "Real Mexicans" part. For instance, Koodo's El Tabador is actually funny/cute; but the dirty Mexican with the sombrero under the table is just plain racist. Those ads might be funny in the US (Arizona and all) but I am surprised to see these in TO.

I am mexican and I don't feel the ads are particularly offensive, but please don't call the food they serve there mexican.

As the owner of Quesada Mexican Grill I would like to set the record straight. The "Sleepy Mexican" was presented to us along with other images but we felt that this particular image crossed the line into poor taste and would offend. As such, we chose not to use this image in any advertising and have never planned to do so in the future. It is unfortunate that is was posted online as it offended many people.

Please don't judge all Torontonians by what a few of us do! Some of us may be in a "completely different universe", but you can find people like that everywhere - not just Toronto. Most of us are just like everyone else in this country, going about our daily lives and thinking ads like these are ridiculous.

Hey Melissa; apologizing for what Toronto has done. I live in Toronto and had nothing to do with this. I live in the milky way, where do you live? I grew up in a small town, and didn't realize that as soon as I moved to Toronto (only a few years ago) my sphincter crawled up over my body and turned me into an arsehole. Thanks for filling me in. And for everyone else, please don't judge Canadians by Melissa. For the record, I do think these ads are in poor taste.

I have not heard of this restaurant or brand or whatever but being from Mexico I thought these ads were hilarious! As far as the lazy Mexican sleeping with the sombrero, the reason he is depicted that way is because lazy americans on vacation thought Mexicans were the lazy ones when in reality they had been up since before sunrise to work in the fields before it got too hot to be out there. So the old depiction of the Mexican with a big Sombrero sleeping as being lazy is incorrect since he was actually avoiding the heat and would continue to work once the hottest part of the day had gone by. But american tourists would wake up a lot later in the day when the Mexican had already been working in the fields while the fat american had been sleeping off his hangover. It is interesting how these stereotypes start. Yes I stereotyped the lazy fat american because I know not all Americans are lazy or fat or raging alcoholics especially since I am married to one hot gringo who is tall, skinny and works very hard all day long!!
