1963—the black woman permed her hair: that's progress.

(click ad, via) Civil rights are beautiful! Remarkable ad via a Maryland company called Apex for their Natural-Perm product. The copy:
"...Americans cannot truly be Americans until we learn to live comfortably with ourselves (and our new hairdos!)...We set out to make the point that both (35-year-old) girls use Natural-Perm. But the inner meaning of the picture itself guided us along a different, and better, path."

(sniffle) Tears in the eyes, and not from the perming solution.

Sad, sad, sad.. But what really is progress is the fact that nothing like this could be printed in North America without uproar today. Oh how times have changed...
