(click ad, via) It almost reads like it could be a real ad. But no, apparently a fake. 25 bucks a week was a fortune in 1860. "Orphans preferred (snicker)." I'm still trying to find out if this obscene retro Chiquita ad is real or fake.
In all probability it is not an original. No one kept stuff like that in 1860 as they had other life-solving issues to be concerned about. Since the Pony Express only went a year, no one would have thought to keep this around but that is the advertising that was being done at that time - they wanted skinny, young men with an ability to ride and endure hardships.

I used to live in Kansas City and bought this postcard in a gift shop of some sort there. I thought it was funny, but I didn't think it was real.
