Two French students protest Burka Ban in face veils & hot pants.
(via) Here's some fierce Girlrilla street advertising. Two anonymous French students in their 20s recently donned niqābs and short shorts and strolled through the streets of Paris, making sure to hit several government ministry buildings. The women, one of whom is Muslim, call themselves "Niqabitches."
"We were not looking to attack or degrade the image of Muslim fundamentalists – each to their own – but rather to question politicians who voted for this law that we consider clearly unconstitutional," they said. "We want to de-dramatise the situation."
The French senate passed the law last month. It is due to go into effect early next year. A woman who chooses to defy the ban will receive a fine of 150 euros (£125) or a course of citizenship lessons, according to the Telegraph. A man who forces a woman to go veiled will be fined 30,000 euros and serve a jail term.

Perhaps if Muslim women were allowed to wear hot pants along with their burkas the law wouldn't have been passed. It was passed because its overly restrictive and demeaning to a large segment of the countries population.
It may be demeaning in some cases, perhaps most, but there is no way of confirming that this is the fact of the matter. And the reality is that a woman has the right to cover her face, just as she has the right to reveal her legs. Regardless of the reasons why certain muslim women are doing so, it cannot be assumed that they are ALL being forced to by an oppressive male or regime in general. I'll agree, to dictate what a person wears is oppressive. However, the french gov't is the only party that is CLEARLY and OPENLY doing so in the case of this legislation. This new legislation is removing choice, or the potential of choice altogether, because it is based in western-orientalized presumption that is racist and naive.
If I can't visit some Middle Eastern countries and dress as I like, (or drive, or travel unchaperoned, or drink alcohol, or practice my religion - which I do in my own country), I think Western governments have the right to refuse what they feel is inappropriate in THEIR own country. Immigrants should remember that it was their decision to live where they do. If they don't like it, they are free to leave.
If Muslims were not so radical and causing so much fear and turmoil in the world, this would be a non-issue. I used to be much more tolerant here in Canada. That was before I had to remove my shoes and be treated like a criminal just to get on a bloody plane.

Yeah, because that's what all countries should strive for - to be MORE like countries with restrictive, sexist practices.
>_< Maybe those of us who disagree want our countries to be more free than that.
