Funny ads for an ad school.

(click ads for closer look)
Much to my consternation, my old NYC ad school has—time and time again—produced visually and conceptually bland self-promotion ads. Which is why I was pleasantly surprised to find the above ads for the AAA Ad School in Capetown, South Africa. While they don't particularly apply to me (620 SAT score in Math, bitches!), they definitely appeal to the one-track mind of the stereotypical ad creative. (images via) related: the first, punny spec campaign I did as a youngster at SVA.

These ads remind me of the brilliance at xkcd.com--which, aside from copyranter, of course, is my favorite blog.

These have been on the web for years... If they're suppose do portray originality then this is pretty ironic.

I didn't say they were new, just creative. And maybe you should proofread your messages before pressing publish so that you don't look like an idiot. Also, look up the definition of "ironic," Alanis Morissette.

I believe what nothingmuch meant to say was that these were stolen from an e-mail that was being forwarded around a long time ago. They were supposedly real exam answers from students (probably fake). But I do believe that both of these were in that attachment...

If this is ethically acceptable, the Something Awful forum is the mother lode of creative ideas. Great use, as CR said, but it made me cringe a little.

thanks sensei. And how many good ad ideas aren't made up of repackaged content or old ideas re-visualized? Close to zero.

Yeah, but they took the EXACT visual and just threw it on an ad.

And speaking of plagiarism, I totally hijacked your 'build a little character' idea (or at least a variant of it) for an ad. Too bad we lost the client and the ad never ran... Imitation is the highest form of flattery, right?

i don't understand why you're defending these so much. i was kind of disappointed when i saw these. they do feel a bit stolen.

OK, they could have come with their own bad answers to equations...but they weren't used in other ads. A couple of the stupid Cannes winners this year stole the exact same idea from other ad campaigns.

690 math, 710 verbal

I could only remember how to solve the second one. Pretty sad.

Jeremy, you'll use any excuse to talk about xkcd.

These ads are great.

Math is not.
