Greenpeace spoofs the VW little Darth Vader spot.

(via) Ooh, a VW death star. I'm not going to get into an eco-car viability discussion here, but this is a pretty sad attempt by Greenpeace to ride the coattails of the original video's huge viral success (over 40 million views). Little Lando Calrissian is a cutie, though. Greenpeace says the video will be distributed online "in more than 14 countries."You can "join the rebellion" here. The VW spot, by Deutsch, just won a Gold "Film" Lion at Cannes. update: Today, Greenpeace also hijacked some London billboards. To view several previous Greenpeace videos, go here.
update: George Lucas forced Greenpeace to take down the video from their site.

Greenpeace uses dead, oil-soaked birds to create protest art.

Cheap, disgusting, pointless trick, or creative, heartbreakingly powerful marketing? (As a man who hates most people and loves all animals, you know where I stand.) Objectively, it falls somewhere between the two.
Backstory: Last October, container ship MV Rena ran aground in the Bay of Plenty off New Zealand, leaking hundreds of tons of heavy oil. Greenpeace says 20,000 birds died as a result— the worst ever NZ maritime environmental disaster.
Greenpeace used some of the birds to create prints, some of which were sent to celebrities. The campaign is a protest against the Kiwi government’s decision to open its waters to deep-sea oil drilling.
The Radiohead almost ruins the video for me. Silence would have been much better. Video below. For many more Greenpeace stunts—from interesting to idiotic—click here.

(kinda nsfw) Greenpeace: save Mother Earth's jungle.

Via Greenpeace in The Netherlands (heh, Netherlands). Firstly, it's 30 seconds too long. Secondly, The model should have dyed her fake bush a rich forest green, amirite? Maybe shaved out a clearing? Sigh. I miss 1970s Playboy Playmates. Previous Greenpeace promos. Previous bushy pussy in ads.

This is NOT a campaign for Greenpeace.

(click, via)
As I first looked at the smaller thumbnails of these layouts, I thought: 'OK, giving a voice to the voiceless', pretty lame, but not bad enough to post about.' Then, I clicked again, and saw the lock-up. You gotta be SHITTIN" me, TBWA, Buenos Aires (the responsible ad agency). Greenpeace-ers? Please do something really embarrassing to this business.
And, just for giggles, here's a recent A/C commercial via Iraq, of all places.

The most beautiful print ads ever produced for Greenpeace.

(click ads, via)
The artwork is so good, it brings tears to my eyes. But not as much as the futility of the message: You want me to "become David" against those giant fucking environment killing machines? Look at them! And you're only giving me a tiny slingshot? What weapons do you guys use? Yeah, no: peace out.
Ad agency: DraftFCB Switzerland.
A shit-ton more Greenpeace ads here.

Greenpeace's humongous North Pole ad.

The organization got artist John Quigley to partially recreate da Vinci's Vitruvian Man on a melting ice pack near the Pole. Nicely metaphorical, dontcha think? Though "global warming" is, as every Tea Party Patriot knows, just a myth.

Ladies and Gentlemen: The Screaming Trees!

(click ad, via) Ha, yeah, made myself chuckle with that grunge rock humor post headline. Just in case you can't make out the words down there on this Greenpeace Brazil ad, they read, "When a tree falls, it takes other lives with it." Yes, but does it make a sound if no one is there to hear it? Shut-up, I'm hot and tired and I need a vacation. I've posted about many Greenpeace ads—good and bad—on Animal NY. Search through them here.

Ironic "Green" ad tchotchke of the week.

(click image) Via Israel, for Greenpeace, it's chopped down tree car air fresheners, which were in fact scent-free. They were handed out to motorists "to encourage a family talk inside the car about the issue" of rainforest deforestation. That would be a short conversation inside the idiot-filled autos of America. The hanging in your face irony of course is that cars kill trees. Maybe have that family talk sitting in the car in the garage. It's the thought that counts, etc. By Tel Aviv agency ACW Grey.

Global Warming logos: from bland to bad to brainless.

Top Row, Left—The logo for Al Gore's fancy organization. Bland and inoffensive, which kinda figures.
Top Row, Right—logo for stopglobalwarming.org. Earth's mohawk is on fire.
Middle Row, Left—Ben & Jerry's contribution to the crisis. Fuck it, man. Let's get toasty and scarf down some blue-greeny melting goodness.
Middle Row, RightHow fucking utterly depressing. The steamrolling, burning earth is going to crush me.
Bottom Row, Left—Greenpeace brings a minimally-talented 5th-grader's aesthetic to this vital struggle.
Bottom Row, Right—Sweet, hot irony. British (sorry, Beyond) Petroleum's logo looks like an exploding earth fireball.
previously in logos:
1. The GPH killer strikes again.
2. War on terror's terrifyingly terrible logo.
3. Blackwater logo Christmas tree ornament.
4. The most Douche ever splattered on a polo shirt.
5. What the marketing director of Chase jerks off to every morning.
6. What the marketing director of Deutsche Bank jerks off to every morning.

Coke's Super Bowl "live ad" polar bears found dead.

(click, via)
Hours before they were supposed to star in "real-time" ads during the Super Bowl XLV NBC broadcast, the two "fan-bears" were found floating dead near their "snowfa" by Canadian helicopters. The cause of death has been determined to be global warming.
Asked for a statement, CEO Muhtar Kent said, "This was a tragic and untimely loss for the Coca-Cola company, America, and the world." Kent had no comment when asked to defend the ridiculousness of a company that significantly contributes to global warming being represented by polar bears.

Greenpeace protests this Amnesty International video.

All that wasted paper, it's an eco-disaster. It's an overwrought bullshit metaphor, but a compelling, nicely-shot overwrought bullshit metaphor. Ad agency: Euro RSCG in Kuala Lumpur. Here's more of AI's overwrought bullshit metaphors.

Leaked cp+b TV script for Al Gore's climateprotect.org

In response to yesterday's Gawker column on the four-agency pitch for Al Gore's climateprotect.org, an anonymous tipster sent me a rough script that he/she says is by Crispin Porter + Bogusky, one of the shops invited to present ideas. It reads like the type of staid idea that'll probably end up running, so I believe the tipster. Here it is:
—————
open on a downtown area of Manhattan.
a kid stands holding a bucket and a paintbrush next to a brownstone apartment. he paints a blue line
on the wall, about five feet high.
KID: "The reality is, if we don't pass legislation to avert the climate crisis, ocean levels will rise this high in 10 years."
the kid then gets on a ladder and climbs several feet, where he paints another line.

KID: "In 25 years, they'll be here."
he paints a line on the side of the building, and climbs higher still.

KID: "And in 50 years the oceans will rise to here, 20 feet."
the camera pans up and over, to a window just above the kid and above the last line he's painted. his mom is standing inside the window, looking at the camera.
KID: "But this isn't gonna happen. No way. Because this is my mom. And she can vote for candidates who support livable carbon standards. I can't save my future. But she can."
cut to Alliance for Climate Protection logo.
—————
The tipster also relays that the spot has already been shot, and that it was shot in L.A.—you know, to get that authentic downtown Manhattan feel (there's an inconvenient truth).
There ya go Al, if you haven't seen it yet.
ADDN: cp+b's Alex Bogusky and Andrew Keller are both winners of my Equine's Posterior™ award.
update: here's a short video from Greenpeace on climate change which also uses a kid. It is better than anything that will come out of this pitch.
previously in reader tips:
1. Someone Talked, round 1.
2. Jason Binn is a prick: the evidence.
3. Send my good tips, or I will stab these kittens/puppies.
