New DIESEL billboard. Please interpret.

(click image) You fashion-forward readers were a big help the last time I asked for assistance interpreting a downtown Diesel poster. This three-part board recently went up on the corner of Houston and Crosby. "Happiness comes from inside. I'm working on it." Well, the impish model is "working on" taking his pants off. To masturbate? To get a handjob from the (stuffed) bear bearing a Diesel wristwatch? He's gay and prefers "bears?" Previous silly Diesel adverts: Pete the Meat Puppet. Only steers and queers wear Diesel. Fuck you.

DIESEL sneakers kick ass. Literally.

(via) Oh you're so cheeky, Diesel. My view: anyone who pays 160 bucks for such an ugly-ass pair of sneaks should be kicking themselves in the ass. But then Diesel, as you probably know by now, insists that its customers Be Stupid.
To see more stupidity, Here's a round-up of recent Diesel campaigns.

DIESEL presents underwear stuporheroes.

(click images, via Diesel) Actually, they're called "Fresh & Bright" superheroes, "making the world a brighter place." Each one is stupider than the next, which is of course the idea, this bit of stupidity being a continuation of Diesel's counter-intuitive Be Stupid campaign. They're costumed smart fighters, here to rid the world of reasonably priced underwear (the men's skivvies retail for a stupid $26).
Previously in Be Stupid
:
• Stupid fucks a glory hole.
• Stupid makes ass-jiggling videos.
• Stupid pays $330 for women's jeans.
• Stupid tit-flashes security cameras (nsfw)
• Stupid sticks army men in ass cracks (nsfw).

DIESEL's slutty shoot at the NYC Transit Museum.

(click images, via) First, the Italian brand pissed off the future crows at Brooklyn Law School by rubbing their briefs all over their briefs. Here, models flash pretend platform oglers from retro cars at the City's Transit Museum. (The lower right shot actually looks like it was taken in a current car.) Those men's underpants are hideous. It would appear that, despite dropping Anomaly London as its ad agency, DIESEL is continuing with its edgy, counter-intuitive Be Stupid campaign (mildly NSFW ads). Reportedly, DIESEL tricked both the school and the museum by telling them they were doing a "denim shoot."

DIESEL resorts to prosaically making fun of IKEA.

Oh edgy Diesel, what the Hell has happened to your advertising? I remember fondly the days when your ads either happily made no fucking sense or at least were on the sick side. Then, you had angels give me the finger (zzz), which you followed up with a tired global warming campaign. Now, with these "Human after all" executions, you've created some nice futuristic sets—but to what effect? I know you can do better, Diesel...STOP BORING ME! You're fashion advertising's only hope! (scanned from BlackBook magazine)
previously in bad fashion ads:
1. Jimmy Choo. Shoes to die for.
2. Sailing with Hickey-Freeman's Carson & Justin.
3. What's Italian for TWAT?
4. DEAD is the new BLACK.
5. The Uniqlo antelope.

DIESEL does unsubtle Dickvertising.

(click ad) But it's so self-aware and self-mocking, so that makes it so clever. Model: Marlon Teixeira. Photographer: the human penis joke Terry Richardson. Last year, Diesel also employed unartful phallicism to sell its Only The Brave fragrance in Mexico. Manscaper Tom Ford is also a practitioner of the Fragrance Bottle as Penis motif (nsfw).

How to get a head in advertising.

(click ads, via) Upmarket UK-based department store Harvey Nichols has done some of the best (and occasionally, the worst) retail fashion advertising ever. These new press ads promoting their summer sale, are, um, different. By DDB London. Previously in really bizarre fashion ads: Comme des GarçonsLoree RodkinLanvinLuciano CarvariDiesel • Diesel again.

DIESEL's new NYC campaign: STUPID.

(click images, via) Be Stupid. Well, it's the most straightforward strategy ever(?) from the Italian brand. And they've blanketed some Times Square subway stations with their new stupidity. Are you stupid enough to challenge a Siberian tiger while wearing $360 distressed jeans? Then, I guess this campaign must speak directly to your stupid heart. Agency: Anomaly. Previous DIESEL campaigns: Quique the Head. Furry Sex. Pete the Meat Puppet. Steers & Queers. The FUCK YOU Angel.

Stupid also has the tits.

(click images, via Ask A Copywriter) The new Diesel "Be Stupid" posters are now all over Manhattan. While the campaign's photography is fun, I'm dumbfounded by the strategy (Stupid pays $360 for distressed jeans). Some of the ads are interesting, some are outright stupid lies. Then there's this execution, which surreptitiously slips in a nip. Btw, this is a perfectly legal maneuver (flashing) in NYC.
Previous Diesel campaigns:
Furry Bear Sex.
Steers & Queers.
Quique the Head.
Pete the Meat Puppet.
The FUCK YOU Angel.

Watch a triptych video for Diesel's new fragrance. It reeks of Warholian pointlessness. (link)

DIESEL continues STUPIDITY.

(click ads, via) New images from the F/W campaign, ads that are probably the Diesel swan song of agency (sorry, "anti-ad agency") Anomaly London. As you can see, this round is more ass crackier, crack eatier, pussy diddlier, and boss fuckier than the first wave (though, less nipplier [nsfw]). Hopefully, this will mark the end of this forced-shock crap that fooled the idiotic judges at Cannes. But may the wonderfully stupid strategic irony of the campaign—perfectly nailed by this subway tagger—live forever.

Monday, March 08, 2010

Tagger sheds light on the stupidity of DIESEL'S "Be Stupid" campaign.

(click poster) Every one of the DIESEL posters in the W4th St. subway station is currently, literally, tagged with a printout of the price tag for the Italian's brand's $330 "Rokket" women's jeans. This Stupid Is As Stupid Overpays point is what makes the whole stupid campaign wonderfully ironic. So, bravo poster-tagger.

Diesel Denim 2010/2011 campaign: middlefinger-puppets up the ass; simulated statue blowjobs.

(click images, via homotography) To smoothly combine product shots and contrived stupidity in fashion ad layouts isn't as easy as you think. Lots of brands attempt it. But nobody does it better (or, worse, if you will) than Diesel. Please go here to view several past edgy examples. These are two shots from the Italian brand's new Fall/Winter 2010/11 denim spreads. Must be getting tough, Renzo Rosso, keeping Stupid Fresh, yes?

So, Multiple Sclerosis turns you into a Furry?

(click ads, via) Inappropriate PSA Ad Week continues on copyranter. Hey, don't blame me for turning this into a sexual post. YOU'RE the crazy borderline bestiality fucks who are into dressing up like animals and fucking. I know catdog girl and deerhunter here are turning some of you on.
Anyway, the campaign—for the MS Society of New Zealand by TBWA/Tequila in Auckland—is saying—badly—that MS causes your brain and body to fight each other. Creative note: What's with hard-to-read typeface, left-braindead art director? Previous Furry Ads: DIESEL and DIESEL again.

Ad Phallicism Update: Diesel Only The Brave.

(click ads) Diesel is currently promoting their Only The Brave men's fragrance in Mexico with a "mad mamacitas" campaign. There's some kind of contest at the site, Locas Por Tu Aroma (crazy for your aroma), for "brave" men to party with the mad mommies. This, I don't care about.
What I care about is how much these enlarged limited edition "Iron Man 2" prop decanters look like a man gripping his pene, a vision that didn't come to me until I saw these scantily-clad ladies straddling the dick cap. Thus concludes this copyranter ad phallicism update (via). Previously in: Ad Phallicism.

Poll: what is this man doing in this DIESEL banner ad?

(click image, found on vice) It was a static banner so what you see is what it was. Is he: fucking a woman? Fucking a man? Fucking a hole in the wall? Pissing on the wall? Being executed? ??? Previously in the stupid DIESEL Be Stupid campaign.

DIESEL Woos fcuk Hoi Polloi.

Where have you gone, refreshingly nonsensical advertising that made Diesel a fashion forward brand? An angel giving me the fucking finger? Here's your 2nd ad in the campaign, free of charge: a devil giving me the peace sign.

The only celebrity endorsement I've ever liked.

Waterston + Waterhouse=everybody remembers the advertiser. Umm, DUH?!? OK 5th graders—who can think of some more famous people and products that would go together?
BILLY: George Bush + Bush's Baked Beans? (Billy farts)
(class laughs)
SALLY: Paris Hilton + Hilton Hotels?
RUSSELL: Hilary Duff + Duff Beer?
JIMMY: Vin Diesel + Diesel?
(class murmurs approval)
EVAN: Tori Spelling + Education?
(class laughs)
MOLLY: Jake Gyllenhaal + U-haul?
COPYRANTER
: Lucy Lawless + a local Bail Bonds Agency?
GEORGINA
(reads 8th grade level): Dennis Miller + Summer's Eve...

(thank you, most recent issue of OK!)
